The Halloween Tree is one of my favorite stories and always makes me nostalgic for that time of year. The story is great and gothic but still, very much for kids. Joseph Mugnaini was once again called upon by Bradbury to illustrate the story and he did a fantastic job. His illustrations, besides the original cover, were scattered throughout the book. I believe there were nine or ten of them. Enjoy.

In addition to writing four arts instruction books, he received many awards for paintings, graphics and book illustrations. Best known for his work with science fiction writer Ray Bradbury, he earned an Academy Award nomination and the Golden Eagle Award for his paintings for the film Icarus, a Bradbury collaboration, He was also the primary illustrator for many of Bradbury’s books. Joseph Anthony Mugnaini passed away January 23, 1992.
My mom took classes with Joseph Mugnaini--and now that I'm about to teach a life drawing class I was looking him up. As an English teacher--I had never seen or heard of The Halloween Tree--must me a Tim Burton favorite?!Thanks for your post!!

Those are great illustration, Specially the vampire in the second picture. It looks like a huge bat with a weird head.
ReplyDeleteJoe Mugnaini (Mon-yee-knee) This is how Joe told me to pronounce it. I was lookiing Joe up and came across this site. Joe was my professor for 3 years at Otis. we became good friends. He was a hell of a guy. No screwing around with Joe and he'd call you out on it. Drawing was serious business to Joe and he taught it that way. He knew the body and he taught it. He and Bentley Schaad were my favorites- Bob Glover another but Bob was Design and Ceramic and I was Drawing and Painting... Joe was intense and he identied with atists that were like himself serious. I was dead serious about my learning and my work and he picked up on that and he'd push me harder and I realized that he was making the effort and I pushed back that much harder and it was worth it. One hell-of-a-teacher!
ReplyDeleteRay used to visit him on campus and it wasn't unusual to see him show up in class and he and Joe would take off for a while-- class was from 8 am to noon Monday - Wednesday and we were always busy. Joe was a real character and he knew how to push you. If he thought you were over working a piece he'd toss an eraser at you and tell you to, "Quit ticklin' it! Step back damn it and take a good look at it." He was always right. He taught that drawing was someting that was not only tangible but intellectual- He wanted you to feel it (the drawing) in a way that got you into the drawing and mentally into that space. Great teacher and fun guy. He invited me to his studio several times and he was a real ladies man and he had a lot of great ladies around him. He smoked cigars and to imagine him without one is not possible...
He loved life to the fullest and he knew how to live. He was a hard worked and I'm very glad to have had the opportunity to have learned "How to Draw" from Him.
